Fraternal organizations have long been a part of Anacortes culture, livening up the community with their philanthropy and support. The Lions Club was conceived as an alternative to many of the older fraternal organizations such as the Elks club, it was a place for young men to go and start their own philanthropy while feeling independent from the older community. It was not long before the Lions were deeply involved with community affairs both serious and fun - such as appearing at the Marineer's Pageant in a custom float. Today the club supports things such as holiday flag-bearing outside local businesses, the annual Easter Egg hunt and White Cane Day (in which the club donates seeing eye canes to help and raise awareness for the visually impaired).
