P Avenue becomes Commercial Avenue

Anacortes' main Avenues are generally categorized through the letter system. However there is one outlier that breaks this mold and its probably the most important avenue in town. Commercial Avenue, once called P Avenue, had its name changed on this day in 1902. The original name was seen as vulgar by many Anacortes residents of the day, so much so that the problem was taken up by city council. Mayor R. P. Thomas signed the ordinance and the name has stuck around ever since.
