Explosion kills six at Equilon (1998)
Saturday, November 25, 2023
Six workers were killed in an explosion and fire at the Equilon Puget Sound Refinery on Thanksgiving Eve, 1998. Those lost were Ron Granfors, Wayne Dowe, David Murdzia, Warren Fry, Ted Cade and James Berlin. Power to the refinery had been knocked out two days earlier during a powerful windstorm, and attempts were under way to restart processing. The explosion took place when a drum of partially processed contents in the plant’s delayed coking unit was opened. Still superheated, the contents ignited upon contact with air.
