The U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced yesterday that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2.3 million grant to the City of Anacortes, Washington.

The City of Anacortes is building a municipal broadband network as an internet service provider. Access, Anacortes Fiber Internet, currently provides internet service to over 1000 customers and continues to expand the network to offer high speed fiber internet service to all Anacortes businesses and residents.

The City is appreciative of the grant support of the project which augments the costs associated with constructing the broadband infrastructure to pass 1,815 premises backfilling the current services areas from D Avenue east to Fidalgo Bay. Expanding the City's broadband internet service is projected to support creation of 157 jobs, retention of 120 jobs, and generation of $240 million in private investment.

"High speed internet is essential infrastructure for our community. The City's commitment to provide fast, reliable, and locally managed broadband internet to our businesses and residents supports economic development in our community and quality of life for our residents. Businesses that have relocated to the City of Anacortes have shared that their decision was largely based on the availability of our municipal broadband. I appreciate the US Department of Commerce's support of this community project and look forward to the day when all Anacortes residents can connect to the City's internet service." said Mayor Matt Miller.
