Anacortes History

  1. Moore Home Hospital burns (1928)

    November 16, 2019, All Day @ 32nd and M Ave

In 1891, the old J.M. Moore house was erected on the NE corner of 32nd and M and from that point on it would live a brief, though eccentric, life. The 1928 Anacortes American would report that, "In the early days, it was one of the show pieces of the city." The Moore house would later be sold to R.E. Davis, then to J.M. Morrison (unrelated to J.M. Moore), and then to Gus Hensler who would sell it in 1923 to Anacortes Physicians and Surgeons. The house would be remodeled as an early hospital for the town, this would not last long however as a chimney fire would level the building on today's date in 1928. The hospital would be moved to the Lowman household until the city could raise enough money for a new "fireproof hospital." Betty Lowman would later write of finding needles in her house post-hospital stint and friends no longer wanting to come over to the house, still reeking with the smell of anesthetic and bad memories.
