  1. United States v. Trident Seafoods Corp. decided (1996)

August 7, 2019, All Day @ U.S. Court of Appeals

In May 1988, Trident Seafoods bought an abandoned cannery in Anacortes, with intentions to renovate and operate business within it. The renovation included asbestos removal, however there was no prior notice of this clean-up given to the Northwest Air Pollution Control Authority, a violation of the Clean Air Act (CAA). In 1992. The EPA would charge Trident with four work place violations and one notice violation of the CAA. Though initially charging a $346,000 fine, Trident would end up taking the case to court. The fine at one point had the chance of reaching as high as $1,100,000 - however it was cut down to a $64,700 fine which was then disputed by Trident to an even smaller and eventual final fine of $25,000.
