Anacortes History

  1. Harry Mansfield becomes mayor (1935)

    January 2, 2022, All Day

Today in Anacortes History, Horace "Harry" Earl Mansfield took the office of mayor of Anacortes. Born September 10, 1889 in Mansfield, Missouri, his Uncle was the attorney for the railroad which ran through the town and its namesake. In 1910 Harry left the family town to attempt to make a life for himself in Washington. He participated in a wide array of careers: working for a tow/passenger boat business, working as a yard foreman at a shipyard building warships during WWI, and quite fittingly working on a railroad at one point. He came to Anacortes after the war and in 1928 started a stevedoring company out of the Taylor Hotel Building on Commercial, an important piece in the explosion of the Port of Anacortes. His popularity surged due to this and his work with labor unions, and in 1935 he took office as mayor, serving one term.
